Imagine receiving an envelope like the one above. It comes from Oakland, a city located in the San Francisco Bay, in California. A city, by the way, that is a melting pot of ethnicities: Asians, African Americans, natives of the Pacific, Indians, Indians, Hispanics, mestizos. A city that, to some extent, is the result of that Tour of the World that has moved us in this III Call. On the other hand, it is clear that, Joey Patrickt has his own style, because the seal that appears, Robot Mail Art Cow: that robotic cow has many references with the avant-gardes and the POP and its relationship with advertisements.
Imagine later, flip the envelope and see something like that.
Another personal stamp of the artist on a quote from John Held that, by the way, has already appeared on this blog, when we justify why mail art is necessary at school (click here). In that appointment Rocola is named, that among other recognitions as an artist, we can find him in the MoMA and that, therefore, is a "classic" reference in this way of understanding art. Patrickt, therefore, is presented to this Call with clear identity signs: authenticity, explicit recognition of the classics or teachers of this way of understanding the art and claiming the origin of the mail art itself.
No wonder, that inside the envelope, we are surprised again with what he has gotten for the Call.
A work that involves a photocopy or a previous material, found, in the sense of Duchamp ready-made or povera art that is so similar to art. Even reprography as an art mode is another of the hallmarks of those who claim for themselves the most radical experimentalism in contemporary art. In fact, there is a very interesting artistic movement called Copy Art and Electrography.
And finally, a postcard that appeals to the surrealism of Dalí and Picasso, for example.
But with a more POP reading, in our view. The use of scissors cutting the wind, cutting the perspectives, for example, of the car, puts us in a different plane, not usual for the eyes. Perhaps, that contains the concrete approach to our III Call, but that is a matter of every spectator. We show it here for each viewer to interpret as they see fit.
